SMS opt-outs, consent and texting best practices

Texting customers is powerful, and it is regulated. Follow these practices to stay compliant, protect your number and get better results.

Get permission first

  • Only send marketing texts to people who have agreed to receive them, for example through a website form with a clear consent checkbox, a sign-up at your counter, or a keyword reply
  • Keep a record of how and when each contact opted in
  • Never text purchased or scraped lists

Make opting out easy

  • Contacts can reply STOP to opt out; Texter marks them inactive so future campaigns skip them
  • Mention how to opt out in your messages, for example "Reply STOP to opt out"
  • Use the contact Edit screen to record opt-out notes for requests made by phone or email

Write good messages

  • Start with your business name so people know who is texting
  • Keep it short, specific and useful, such as availability, dates, times and location
  • Send during reasonable hours, generally between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. in the recipient's time zone
  • Do not overload your list. A few valuable messages beat frequent promotions

US carriers require business texting numbers to be registered (A2P 10DLC). XaaS Techs helps register your brand and campaign so your messages are delivered.
